Transcription Projects

We have numerous projects to transcribe and are seeking volunteers to assist. Please contact tracey@preservingnewbury.com for more information or to volunteer.


Video Transcription Project

We have eleven videos from the Town of Newbury that range in length from 30 minutes to one hour to be transcribed for publication on our website.

Duties Include:

  1. The videos on the history of the town as told by residents are hosted on YouTube. The volunteer will play the video and transcribe the audio into text. There are several technology tools that can be used to assist in facilitating the transcription or the volunteer can simply listen, pause the video and type the text.
  2. Once complete, the volunteer will review the transcription against the video to ensure accuracy.

Total time commitment: Dependent on skill set of volunteer. A 30 minute video could take between four and six hours to complete.

Skills and materials needed: A computer with access to the internet, word processing software, E-mail.


Monument Transcription Project

We have photos of the town monuments to be transcribed and cataloged for publication on our website.

Duties Include:

  1. Monuments: There are five town monuments dedicated to Veterans or the First Settlers. Transcribe the information as it appears on the monument and document the condition of the monument. Photos can be provided or volunteer can visit each site and take their own photos/transcribe in person.
  2. Research: While not required, a volunteer may be interested in conducting factual research about the people listed on the monuments and headstones to be included in the Preserving Newbury database.

Total time commitment: Dependent on skill set of volunteer, the five monuments could take approximately 5 hours to transcribe.

Skills and materials needed: A computer with access to the internet, word processing software, spreadsheet software (Microsoft Excel or equivalent), E-mail.


Headstone Transcription Project

Headstones from town cemeteries to be transcribed and cataloged for publication on our website.

Duties Include:

  1. Headstones: There are seven cemeteries in Newbury that we would like to survey. The volunteer would transcribe the information as it appears on the headstone and document the condition of the headstone using the provided transcription sheets. Photos can be provided or volunteer can visit each site and take their own photos/transcribe in person.
  2. Research: While not required, a volunteer may be interested in conducting factual research about the people listed on the monuments and headstones to be included in the Preserving Newbury database.

Total time commitment: The headstone project will included thousands of items and will take approximately 10-15 minutes per stone to transcribe.

Skills and materials needed: A computer with access to the internet, word processing software, spreadsheet software (Microsoft Excel or equivalent), E-mail.
